design PROCESS

Portable Utensil Set

  • Repurpose old metal silverware.

  • Create new handle out of recycled PLA plastic from 3D print waste.

Utensil ends snap into handle with a spring ball plunger and indentation.

Case Iterations

GLASSES CASE

This design looked sleek but was extremely awkward to use and caused frustration.

WATER BOTTLE CASE

This case was useful as a cup as well as utensil set but it was large and the functionality was clumsy compared to other solutions.

ROTATING PIPE CASE

Indentations on the inside of the cylinder snap into position at each marked position. Providing feedback to the user.

future improvements

Nothing can do without some improvements, here are some things I have noticed from user testing.

improve intuitive nature

  • Use indicators to highlight correct positioning and assembly of utensil and case.

  • Remove design cues such as ribbing on bottom dial to prevent twisting plastic insert in opposite directions.

  • Use more color for fun options and coded directions.

  • Explore more ergonomic handle designs.

design for certified food safety

  • Use different materials for the plastic insert to maximize sustainability, cleanability and food safety.

  • Optimize the case design for easy disassembly for cleaning.

increase portability

  • Experiment with materials such as aluminum to reduce weight and preserve metal aesthetics.

  • Test methods of reducing noise of container.

optimize for manufacturing

  • Design to reduce steps of manufacturing.
